Ukiyo-e meets Italy: the wave collection, explained
Why Hokusai's wave and Italy's landmarks aren't as strange a pairing as they sound.
"Ukiyo-e" — literally "pictures of the floating world" — is the Japanese woodblock print tradition that produced Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa, arguably the most recognized print in art history. It's also where Floating Boot's own name comes from. This collection takes that specific visual language — the curling wave, the flattened perspective, the bold negative space — and wraps it around a landmark that has nothing to do with Japan: an Italian one. It shouldn't work. It does, because both traditions share the same instinct — reduce a place to its single most powerful line.
The Colosseo, twice
Rome's amphitheater gets two different readings in this collection: a full-color vintage travel-poster version, and a version built specifically around the Great Wave motif, with stamp-style typographic details that nod to the woodblock print tradition directly.

Duomo di Milano, framed by the wave
Milan's cathedral is one of the most photographed buildings in Italy, which makes it a genuine design challenge to redraw without repeating every postcard. This piece frames the Duomo inside Hokusai-inspired wave forms and adds kanji cartouche detailing — a direct, visible crossover rather than a subtle reference.

Lake Como and the Costa Smeralda
Two water-facing pieces round out the collection. The Tempio Voltiano rises out of a Hokusai-style wave with the lake and mountains behind it in high-contrast blue and white. Further south, "Portocervo Waves" reimagines the Costa Smeralda's marina — sailboats, cliffs, deep indigo — through the same lens, in a softer, more summer-weight palette.
